Luke 11:1-4

The Lord's Prayer

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread,
4 and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

Questions:
Doctrine - How we Think
  • Jay mentioned that “God often allows us to feel and sense our need before he moves to fulfill it”. Why do you think this is true? Give examples.
  • What is the significance of the prayer beginning with “our Father”?
  • Is there a section of the prayer that you understand more clearly after hearing the sermon?
Worship - How we Feel
  • There are a variety of reasons that people don't pray, such as lack of discipline, lack of enjoyment, a lack of conviction, etc. Which of these (or another reason) resonate with you and why?
  • When we pray we explore the mystery of intimacy with God. Do you experience intimacy with God when you pray? Why or why not?  What factors
contribute to a meaningful time of communion with the Lord?
Application - What we Do
  • Regarding the Lord's Prayer, John Calvin said “For he prescribed a form for us in which he set forth as in a table all that he allows us to seek of him, all that is of benefit to us, all that we need ask. From this kindness of his we receive great fruit of consolation: that we know we are requesting nothing absurd, nothing strange or unseemly — in short, nothing unacceptable to him —since we are asking almost in his own words.”
    • We can be bold in our prayers because the pattern has been set for us by Jesus.
    • Share with each other in what way you would like to see your prayer life changed (examples: Ability to find set aside time, greater desire, less distractibility, etc) and then pray together for these things.
