Luke 1:1-4

Dedication to Theophilus

1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.
Questions:
Doctrine - How we Think
  • Luke emphasizes that his account is based on the testimony of eyewitnesses, and careful research. Why is it important that the Bible is a book of historical accuracy and reliability?
  • Discuss the idea of truth in modern society. How do you think an introduction like this would be received today?
Worship - How we Feel
  • Luke wrote that his readers might have certainty about the things of God. Describe times in your life when you have experienced uncertainty. Why is certainty about the things of God important? How does this idea connect with the reality of doubt?
Application - What we Do
  • As you consider our upcoming study of Luke’s gospel, how certain are you about the things you have been taught about Jesus, the gospel, and discipleship? What are you uncertain about that you can ask God through prayer to make certain through our study of Luke’s gospel?
