Luke 10:38-42

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Questions:
Doctrine - How we Think
  • The passage begins with mentioning Martha's hospitality as she “welcomed him into her house”. Does Jesus criticize Martha for her service and hospitality? Is there anything wrong with her service and hospitality?
  • The passage continues and we see the juxtaposition of Mary and Martha's actions:
    • Mary: “sat at the Lord's feet” (vs 39)
    • Martha: “Distracted with much serving” (vs. 40)
    • Is it better to always sit at the Lord's feet and do nothing else? How do we know when to serve and work vs when to sit and listen?
Worship - How we Feel
  • Which sister most closely resembles your personality and why? How has this impacted your approach to discipleship and following Jesus?
  • Jay mentioned that Martha essentially wanted to force Mary to serve Christ in her way. Have you ever experienced this feeling? Share with the group if there is an example you can think of.  Why is this the wrong way to approach things?
  • Martha's issue stemmed not from her service, but the heart behind it that was anxious and troubled about many things. Have you felt this way before? How do we combat this feeling?
Application - What we Do
  • Following Jesus requires that we sit down and listen. Jay said that “Life will not automatically arrange itself into proper priorities.”  What do you do to spend time with Jesus? Do you need to change what your “sitting down and listening” looks like?
  • Is your spiritual life more characterized by devotion or distraction? Pray that the Spirit would show you areas where distraction remains.
