Luke 4:1-13

The Temptation of Jesus

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’”
And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’
and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Questions:
Doctrine - How we Think
  • What are some things that the Bible teaches about the devil, or Satan? Discuss some passages that might inform your answer.
  • Discuss the ties to the Old Testament in this text. How is Jesus the greater Adam? How is Jesus the greater Israel?
  • Discuss the doctrine of the perfection of God. Do you think the perfect life of Jesus diminishes his relation to us  knowing that he is not capable of sin? What are some of the implications of Jesus' perfection?
Worship - How we Feel
  • What are ways that you could be "deifying your needs?" In other words, what are ways your worship could be skewed in your own life moving away from God to your needs?
  • Do you find yourself tempted to test God in what he has declared to be true? In what areas do you struggle to accept what God has said? How can you fight against this temptation in order to rest in God's truth and promises?
Application - What we Do
  • Jesus is described as being full of the Holy Spirit. Do you believe this is true of believers today at all times? If so, discuss how this impacts your life day to day.
  • Describe ways that the idea of taking a shortcut for what God has for you might show up in your life. Maybe testify to something in the past or share something you're wrestling with now. How can you trust in him and his ways during that?
